According to the government's scholarship program, the NMMS Examination provides students in class 6 with financial support for their higher education. Initially, the scheme was introduced in May 2008 for talented students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. In its full name, the National Merit-Means Scholarship is known as the NMMS.
Scholarships are offered by the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS), which provides financial assistance to students attending secondary level (9) schools (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th). Most NMMS scholarships are open for application in July, and the deadline is usually in December. As part of the NMMS scholarship program, INR 12,000 will be deposited monthly as a payment of INR 1000. Each year, students who qualify for the NMMS scholarship are awarded the opportunity to continue their studies at any state government school in the country.
Students are selected for NMMS scholarships through NMMS olympiad exams for class 6 conducted by the state government. In this exam, two sections are: a test of mental ability and a test of scholastic aptitude. The exams are administered according to the guidelines set by the governing bodies of the states/UTs. A maximum of 90 minutes should be allocated to the applicant for the examination.
Under a decentralized scheme, each State/UT can set its own NMMS and NTSE questions. The SAT and MAT sections are the same in all states and UTs.
To take the NMMS exam, you have to meet these requirements:
The Government Sponsored Scheme “National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMS)” was first launched in May 2008. The scheme was designed to provide financial assistance for those who are economically backward but are exceptionally good at studies. In one of the research done by NSSO the dropout rate was high in secondary school (9th class - 10th class) which is nearly 17% than that of elementary and upper secondary. So the Indian government had taken an initiative to slow down this trend. students whose parents income is less than 1.5 LPA are eligible for the scholarship to utilize this benefit. The State Bank of India will fork out money directly to their bank accounts.
It's an Indian government initiative to support talented young individuals who are economically disadvantaged. The government has created a platform to enhance the children 's career prospects by providing financial assistance in terms of scholarship at their secondary and higher secondary levels. Even though it’s a central government initiative, the state government looks after the process and selects the students according to the eligibility criteria of NMMS scholarship.
