A fraction is a number that tells a connection within a part (expressed by the numerator) and a whole (expressed by the denominator). Although you see two numbers, you have to consider one idea, the connection.
A fraction can be used to identify the part of a whole.
For example, the resulting circle is split into four equal parts: blue, green, yellow, and red. Each section, or color, of the circle, depicts 1/4 (one-fourth) of the whole circle. 4/4 or 1 describes the whole circle.
You use numerators and denominators to name fractions. The numerator of the fraction shows the number of components being studied. The denominator of the fraction shows the number of parts in a whole.
If two fractions have the same denominator, the fraction with the bigger numerator denotes the bigger part of the whole. If the denominators of two fractions from the corresponding whole are the same, then the parts are the same.
You can practice the symbols for bigger than and less than (< and >) when comparing fractions with the same denominator.
